Mr Bush - Cinematography

Tilt has been used most of the time within this extract to identify the character status and class such as the working class people the camera shows them from top to toe and goes up higher to show they have not the power other people are above them however as they show scenes of the wealthier and formal people there is a tilt movement but it stops going higher above them to show they have the highest status and all the power. Also long shots have been used to show the setting and what’s in the surroundings that fit in with the character. Another camera shot that has been used a lot is medium shot to show the characters facial expressions and what their reaction is.

The camera angle represented here is a long shot, not only does it show characters, it also allows the audience to create a feel for the setting, which in this scene is the dessert, which allows the audience to sympathise with the heat etc. Also, this long shot creates the emphasis of the distance of the dessert, furthermore the audience are engaged with suspense of not knowing who or what the characters are doing, which allows them to ask questions, and really think about the scene.

Mr Bush - Extention Task

When motion pictures were first introduced, there were three major problems with producing movies with synchronized sound. Those problems were synchronization, playback volume, and sound fidelity. As Technology for producing moving pictures has progressed much faster than technology for reproducing sound. It soon became possible for the technology to produce sound that could be heard by large audiences.

This technology was held in the grip of RCA and Western Electric, which, in 1926, cross-licensed each other’s amplification patents. Using state-of-the-art vacuum tube amplifiers, movie sound, whether recorded on disc or film, could boom into the auditorium.

By the early 1930s, the talkies were a global phenomenon. In the United States, they helped secure Hollywood's position as one of the world's most powerful cultural/commercial systems. In Europe the new development was treated with suspicion by many filmmakers and critics, who worried that a focus on dialogue would subvert the unique aesthetic virtues of soundless cinema.
Some of the films of early 1929 were substandard movies to meet the unexpectedly strong demand for talkies.

Films Homework

What is the Process In Making a Film?
  1. Writer has an idea
  2. He creates an outline and use it to promote interest in the idea
  3. A studio or independent investor decides to purchase rights over the film
  4. People brought together to make the film (screen, writer, producer, director, cast, crew)
  5. Film made sent to studio
  6. The studio makes a licencing agreement with a distribution company
  7. The distribution company determines how many copies print of the film to make
  8. Distribution company shows the movie (screening) to prospective buying representatives the theatres
  9. Buyers negotiate with distribution company on which movie they wish to lease  and terms of lease agreement
  10. Prints sent to theatres few days before opening day
  11. Theatre shows movie for specific number of weeks
  12. Buy ticket watch film
  13. End of engagement theatre sends print back to distribution company and makes payment on lease agreement
What is Film Distribution?
The distribution of a film or movie is the process through which a movie is made available to watch for an audience. This task may be accomplished in a variety of ways, for example, with a theatrical release, a home entertainment release in which the movie is made available on DVD-video or Blu-Ray disc or as a TV broadcast. The distribution company makes a legal agreement with the creator(s) of film or movie enabling them full rights to the film ideas which lets them use the movie in anyway they wish.

The distribution company also brokers the deal with cinemas to make the number of copies of the film that the theatres need. This agreement  also includes the payment that the cinemas owe the distribution company for the possession of the film.

What is Horizontal & Vertical Integration?
Horizontal integration indicates the acquisition of competitors in the same section of an industry.
Vertical integration indicates the control of three main areas of production, distribution and exhibition. Such as the, Time warner and AOL merge.
What was the Hollywood 'studio system' like in the 1930's and 40's?
The studio system was a means of film production and distribution dominant in Hollywood from the early 1920s through the 1950s. The term studio system refers to the practice of large motion picture studios. The first thing people think of is producers and how these people shaped Hollywood. The Studio System during the 1930s strangled independent cinema and took such great liberties to turn a profit that creativity was severely compromised. The Studio System was run by the producer's that worked within it, and the films that they produced were under their total control.

Film Noir

1) In the 1940s and 50s, a film style called film noir filled the cineam screens in America. Film Noir movies often portrayed the dark side of American life, full of urban crime. Film noir also had a distinctive style, with shadow-filled low-key lighting. As the Night ruled in film noir, the shadow was more important than the light.

The low-key lighting used in many classic film noirs are associated with light and dark contrasts and dramatic shadow patterning a style known as chiaroscuro (a style associated to art). Film noir is also known for its use of low-angle, wide-angle shots.

2) This image from a piece of Film Noir  text consists of Back lighting and this is why it is an image of Low-Key lighting. Back lighting is used in this image to create suspense around a character as you cannot see their face but you can definitely see a siloheutte through the light.

The camera angle within the image is wide-angle shot which looks directly at the character. Also as you cannot see the characters face this immideatley connotes that evil is associated to the character as dark colours usually denote trouble. Furthermore, the characters body language and pose suggest he is agitated and seeking or creating trouble.

3)
In this short film extract from a piece of Film Noir is used to show the huge contrast in the colours used as this shows Low-Key lighting. The shadow sorrounding the main character suggests that he has a split personality as the lighting in the film extract draws attention upon the gun and other weapons such as knifes held by the characters. Most of the male characters facial expressions within the film extract are intense.

Whereas, the female characters within the extract do not have intense facial expressions but instead are made to look sexy under the lighting and this is shown within the film extract as we only see the colour red within the extract when love and romance is being connoted. This is shown when we see a dead woman lying down on a bright red heart shaped bed to show the links between the one of the main characters and the woman lying on top of the bed.

Mise-en-Scene

Independent Task

1) In this particular image, the mise-en-scene consists of a Old ancient looking house based right in the middle of what looks the woods and also a graveyard as tombstones are seen in the front garden. The use of dark colours in the image, such as grey, brown and black suggests that it is rundown and connotes that trouble is sorrounded the house which in turn creats a very mistfying atmosphere.

The fact that there is only one light one in the house, even further creates an intense atmosphere and creates suspense, in turn making the audience think, "who lives there!?"

The graveyard infront of the house further creates a spooky setting and the misty weather and trees futher creates suspense.

2)
The mise-en-scene for this extract from the film Takers, includes a 5 star hotel. With the characters wearing Smart suits and clothing which suggests they are rich. The mise-en-scene also includes a bank with terrifyed people laying down on the floor with intimidating characters firing guns. Also, we see a glass shatter due to gun fire which suggests the robbers are serious and even more creates suspense and terrifys the people in the bank. The genre of this film is a Drama/Action and is targeted at the 16-24 year old demographic.

3)
This particular Film extract is from the movie 2010 blockbuster G.I. Joe. The genre of G.I Joe is action the Mise-en-scene in the film extract shows many characters holding weapons which connote to possible audiences that the film is an action movie. Which it is, as it is targeted at a 16-24 demographic.

The colours used in the Mise-en-scene are mostly dark colours which denotes that trouble will occur within the film.In the mise-en-scene we also see a contrast in colour to represent which characters are evil and which are good. We see this in film extract as characters based in lighter backgrounds suggest to the audience that they are the good characters. However on the other side the characters in dark colours connote to the audience that they are evil.

4)

This film extract is from the hit film Twilight. The genre of this film is romance/ fantasy. The Mise-en-scene could suggest a love triangle due to the way the characters are positioned within the film extract. We see this when one of the main characters Jacob is shown to protect the female character Bella. Also within the mise-en-scene the candles connote a romance as it sets a light hearted scene.

Furthermore, as the two main characters Jacob and Edward look at the camera indirectly, this suggests rivalry due to the characters facial expressions.

Ms.Wigleys Homework

1) Fantastic Four(2005)

2) Fantastic Four is a American action comedy film produced by 20th century fox. It was brought to the attention of the audience by targeting kids and youths by establishing links with fast-food companies to produce toys based on the characters of the film to give away with meals for instance, "a free toy with a happy meal". They also produced mainstream action figures to be sold in toy shops around the country, such as Toys 'R' Us.

The film was advertised worldwide with the use of billboards, buses, TV advertisements and even created a new kids cartoon based on the film. Fox also established links with a leading games producer Acclaim to have a game made around the film to be sold on all platforms.

Media Film Posters

Batman: The Dark Knight
This specific film poster uses colour very effectively as the dark gloomy background highlights that there is trouble around. The film poster contains iconographic elements such as the burning batman logo which is instantly recognisable.

The tagline within the film poster furthermore suggests trouble is brewing within the film as it read "Welcome to a world without rules" which sounds quiet intimidating and threatening.

The genre of this film is Action/Thriller and is targeted at the 16-24 year old demographic. The main Character in the film poster is Batman and his pose and facial expression is quiet intense and as the camera is looking at up him,it suggests that he is the saviour and the hero. This therefore hows that the film is being promoted through the character .

Transformers 2: Revenge Of the fallen
This film poster also uses colour very effectively as the difference in colour within the background highlights and creates mystery and suggests edge of your seat entertainment. The film poster also contains iconographic elements such as Optimus prime in the most recognized and popular transformer in the background.

The tagline within the film poster furthermore suggests action and mystery as it read "More alien robots, bigger explosions and much more megan fox", with the words Alien robots, Explosions and Megan Fox in bold writing to emphasise the point.

The genre of this film is Action/Thriller and is mostly targeted men, young adults and teenagers from the ages of 16-24.

The main Character in the film poster is Sian La Beouf and Megan Fox, as you can see from Sian La Beoufs intense facial expression, it shows him looking up in suprise and mystification which suggests that he is scared and trouble is brewing.

However, Most of the space on the film poster is being taken up by the Co-star of the film Megan Fox, as she is dressed up to look sexy in a revealing dress and a "come and get me" facial expression. Also, the fact that the tagline read "And much more Megan Fox", This therefore suggests the film is being promoted through Megan Fox to its target audience which is most Men and boys within the 16-24 demographic.

Conclusion
In conclusion I believe that the transformers 2 film poster is more effective and successful than the Batman film poster as I believe it creates more suspense and excitement as the colours create the mood of the film. I also believe it is more successful as it shows all 3 main characters on a single platform with different identities which makes the audience question "what is going to happen to Sam and the transformers!?" and therefore, I believe it will sell more than Batman.

Media Ownership Research Task

Media texts are profit motivated
Alot of media texts these days are all profit motivated, this raises alot of issues as the owners of these media institutions are gaining more and more power up to the point where all the different institutions may work with each other so that in the end this group will end up with more power to control what we know about the world, both politically & socially. This is a big worry as companies may be able to brain wash the publics views and opinions and control what the people see, read and think.

Furthermore, as media institutions are very much profit motivated They appear to be only promoting the product just so that the advertisements within the programme looks good, which in turn, makes the company look good and raises profits and worth. Therefore, If the advertisment promotes the product well it makes the people want to begin to buy the product due to the good quality of the advert. Which will increase the profit of the product and the profits of the instituion reponsible for showing the advertisement.

Media Companies & Power
Many times across the world, Media texts have been used as propaganda which is bluntly misleading information. Many media companies, who produce advertisements, produce advertisements that are misleading as they make the product seem so much more worth it than it actually is.

This therefore influences the audience who see the advertisement to buy the product just because the advert looks amazing and many times after buying the products they will be very much disappointed that they have spent so much money on a rubbish product that was just glammed up on its advertisement to look better than it is.

Furthermore, this shows that media institutions are so powerful and that they are having a financial influence on the public and should be in some way regulated.
A good example of the Media power is wars which are taking part in a different continent. The media are in control of what content we receive, regarding the happenings of events halfway across the world as they only show the soldiers to be good within the media texts, however it may be that the soldiers have intimidated the militia and cause them to attack but media institutions have so much power that they may choose not to publish this and we would only see the views of the soldier and not hear the other side of the story.
